Fidelity Bank Plc has strengthened its environmental advocacy efforts by donating large-capacity recycling bins to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, as part of its commitment to promoting responsible waste management and sustainability.
The donation took place during the 19th edition of the Walk for Nature held on November 1, 2025, at YABATECH. Themed “Lagos, Let’s Beat Plastic Pollution,” the annual awareness campaign was organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) in collaboration with the Lagos State Government to encourage eco-friendly practices and curb plastic pollution.
Speaking at the event, Fidelity Bank’s Divisional Head of Brand and Communications, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to environmental sustainability through advocacy and action.
“As a socially responsible institution, sustainability remains central to our business philosophy,” Dr. Nwagboh stated. “Beyond deploying renewable energy across our branches and ATMs, we actively promote recycling and waste reduction. Our donation of three large recycling bins to YABATECH underscores our commitment to nurturing a culture of responsible waste management among students.”
He also commended the NCF and the Lagos State Government for their efforts in promoting environmental consciousness, urging Nigerians to embrace lifestyle changes that reduce plastic use.
“Tackling plastic pollution requires deliberate individual choices. By reducing single-use plastics and embracing recycling, we can position Lagos as a model megacity for environmental stewardship,” he added.
In her remarks, Chairman of the NCF National Executive Council, Hon. Justice R.I.B. Adebiyi, described plastic pollution as a major global threat. She highlighted the significance of taking the campaign to an academic institution for the first time.
“Engaging students is vital because they embody the creativity and drive to build a sustainable future. Fidelity Bank’s donation to YABATECH goes beyond symbolism—it represents responsibility and change,” Justice Adebiyi said.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, called plastic pollution a “silent global crisis” requiring collective action.
YABATECH Rector, Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for their contributions.
“These recycling bins will be strategically placed across the campus to promote eco-friendly behavior and strengthen our waste management system,” he noted.
The initiative reinforces Fidelity Bank’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes renewable energy adoption, tree planting, and environmental beautification projects nationwide.
