The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

This annual celebration honors the vital role Nigerian workers play in national development. According to the Minister, the hard work and resilience of the workforce continue to drive progress and stability across the country.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo praised Nigerian workers for their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices. He stated that their daily efforts contribute significantly to the country’s development and the respect Nigeria commands on the global stage.

“There is dignity in labour,” he said. “The dedication and excellence we apply to our work are key elements in building a strong and prosperous nation.”

He encouraged workers to embrace innovation and increase productivity. According to him, raising professional standards will not only benefit individual growth but also improve governance and service delivery.

Aligning with the 2025 Workers’ Day theme, which focuses on health and safety in a changing climate, the Minister emphasized the need for proactive measures. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating safe and supportive working environments.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged all stakeholders to implement sustainable practices that address climate-related risks. He emphasized that cooperation across sectors is necessary to protect workers and ensure long-term economic resilience.

Renewed Hope and National Development

The Minister assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that the government will continue to prioritize job security, innovation, and inclusivity in the workplace.

He also encouraged workers to remain hopeful and focused, stressing that their efforts are key to unlocking the nation’s full potential.

This announcement follows the recent Easter break observed on April 18 and 21, 2025. These holidays allowed Christians to celebrate Good Friday and Easter Monday nationwide. Similarly, May 1 continues to serve as a statutory holiday dedicated to workers’ recognition.

As Nigeria marks Workers’ Day, the government calls for unity, excellence, and shared responsibility in building a more prosperous future.
