A fresh rift has emerged between former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo following a controversial text message Fayose sent after his 65th birthday celebration.

Obasanjo, who attended the event in Ibadan on Saturday, described the message as an “uncomplimentary thank-you note” in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, in Abeokuta. The former president said Fayose’s words reflected “who and what he is—unchanged and unchangeable.”

Obasanjo disclosed that he returned a monetary gift Fayose sent through an associate, Foluso Adeagbo. “Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are: unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been sent back… unopened by me,” Obasanjo reportedly replied.

Sources told LEADERSHIP that Fayose had earlier accused Obasanjo of suffering from a “heightened stage of dementia,” reacting to comments Obasanjo made during the birthday event.

In his text, Fayose expressed displeasure at the former president’s remarks, calling them “irresponsible” for someone of his age. He added: “I kept quiet at the event so the world could see the difference between a sane person and a mad man. It is obvious you have lost your sanity… Not to worry Baba, I shall set the records straight in due course.”

Fayose also demanded the return of his money, writing: “I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted receiving it… Your leopard will never change its skin.”
