British actress Prunella Scales, best known for her iconic portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 93.

Her family announced on Tuesday that she died “peacefully at home in London” on Monday. In a statement shared by her sons, Samuel and Joseph, they revealed that Scales had been “comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love” in her final days. “She was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died,” they added.

Scales was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013 but continued to appear on screen for several years alongside her husband, veteran actor Timothy West. The couple, married for 61 years, starred together in the Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys. West passed away in November 2024 at the age of 90.

While Scales enjoyed a prolific career spanning nearly seven decades, she is most fondly remembered for her sharp-witted performance as Sybil Fawlty — the sarcastic yet lovable wife of hotel owner Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese.

Cleese, in a heartfelt tribute, described her as “a truly wonderful comic actress” and recalled being “very, very fond” of his co-star. “Scene after scene, she was absolutely perfect,” he said.

Tributes also poured in from across the UK, including from Downing Street, where a spokesperson for the Prime Minister praised Scales as “a part of the golden era of British comedy” whose talent “was beamed into people’s homes for generations.”

In 2019, Fawlty Towers was named the greatest British sitcom of all time by Radio Times magazine. Despite running for only two series between 1975 and 1979, the show remains a cultural landmark in British television history.

Beyond her comedic fame, Scales took on a wide range of roles in theatre and film, notably portraying Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution and performing a solo stage production titled An Evening With Queen Victoria.

She is survived by her two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
