Family Cries Out as Glo Staff Remains in Captivity Over a Month After Kidnap in Imo

The family of Olaoluwa Adetona, a Globalcom staff abducted in Imo State over a month ago, has raised an urgent alarm, demanding immediate and transparent action from the telecom giant and security authorities to ensure his safe return.

Adetona was kidnapped on May 6, 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., while returning from an official assignment in Umuaka, Njaba LGA of Imo State. Armed men reportedly attacked his Toyota Hilux, allowing his two expatriate colleagues to escape while he was taken away.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 12, the family described their pain and anguish over the prolonged silence and unfulfilled promises.

“It has been over a month of agonizing uncertainty since Olaoluwa was snatched from his family,” the statement read.

According to his wife, Mrs. Funmi Adetona, her world shattered when she called his phone that day and a stranger answered.

The family said Globalcom initially assured them that negotiations were ongoing. At one point, they were told Adetona had briefly spoken with colleagues, and the abductors had promised to release him on May 9. However, that promise—and another made the following day—was never kept.

As hope faded, Mrs. Adetona visited the company’s headquarters in Lagos on May 21 and its Imo regional office the next day, but received only vague reassurances.

Now, the family is urging Globalcom and all relevant authorities to intensify efforts, maintain open communication, and do everything possible to secure his release.

The case is currently with the Nigerian Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri, while the family is appealing to the public to provide any useful information.

“Our only focus is Olaoluwa’s safe return. We urge those in positions of power to act swiftly and with compassion,” the statement concluded.
