El-Rufai Joins ADC, Signals New Political Direction Ahead of 2027

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai completed his registration at his ward in Ungwan Sariki, Kaduna North Local Government Area, where he expressed confidence in the ADC as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He criticised the APC-led government, describing it as incompetent.

He urged Nigerians, particularly young people aged 18 and above, to obtain their ADC membership cards, noting that active participation would strengthen democratic choice in the 2027 polls.

The former governor is a key figure in the opposition coalition that, during a meeting in July, resolved to adopt the ADC as its political vehicle to challenge the APC in the next election cycle.

Recently, the party appointed former Senate President, David Mark, as its interim national chairman following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, was also named interim national secretary.

El-Rufai’s formal entry into the party comes just days after former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, announced his decision to join the ADC-led coalition.

The former governor confirmed his membership in a brief post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, sharing photos of himself holding the party’s card with the caption, “It’s official.”

El-Rufai was also in attendance last week at the unveiling of the ADC’s national secretariat in the Wuse 2 district of Abuja, an event led by the party’s national leadership as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
