The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has distanced the party from recent remarks made by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, concerning the upcoming 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and its relationship with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ologunagba had claimed during a press briefing in Abuja that the PDP was not obligated to notify INEC about its routine meetings, including the NEC session slated for June 30. However, in a sharp rebuttal, Damagum disowned the statement, labeling it “unauthorised” and not reflective of the party’s leadership stance.

In a personally signed statement released in Abuja, Damagum said: “Let me clearly and unequivocally state that the comment by Ologunagba was made without the approval of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.”

He further revealed that the party’s leadership would be engaging directly with INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to address the commission’s concerns, which had been formally communicated in a letter.

Expressing his disappointment, Damagum said he was “shocked” that such a delicate issue was taken to the media without following internal protocols or consulting party leadership.

“In my capacity as the acting national chairman, I wish to make it categorically clear that the views expressed by Ologunagba in those press interactions were entirely his personal opinions and do not represent the official position of the PDP,” he affirmed.

While emphasizing the party’s dedication to defending its autonomy, Damagum stressed the need for unity and discipline, noting that the PDP would proceed with its NEC meeting based on due process and collective agreement.

“Our strength lies in our unity, discipline, and adherence to due process. The PDP remains committed to conducting its 100th NEC meeting in accordance with constitutional provisions and democratic norms—but not through personal posturing,” he concluded.
