Datti Baba-Ahmed: Obi Welcome Back to Labour Party if ADC Ticket Fails

The Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, says Peter Obi would be warmly received back into the party if he does not secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, arguing that Obi’s return to the Labour Party would be preferable to pursuing what he described as “another type of agenda.”

“If Peter Obi does not get the ticket at the ADC, he is more than welcome back to the Labour Party. I will stand there, and nobody will do anything bad to Peter Obi. It is better for him to come back than to pursue another agenda,” he said.

His comments come days after Obi joined an opposition coalition built around the ADC, nearly three years after both men contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party ticket.

Baba-Ahmed also denied reports claiming he had declared interest in contesting the presidency, describing such reports as false.

“I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility in the future. I only reaffirmed my membership of the Labour Party. Anyone interested will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to invite expressions of interest,” he explained.

He blamed social media sensationalism for spreading what he described as misleading narratives that appeal to emotional audiences.
