Renowned Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, has opened up about his personal struggles, admitting that he once repeated the same mistakes made by his father, legendary musician Sir Shina Peters, before finding the strength to forgive him.
In a recent podcast appearance, the 41-year-old filmmaker revealed that a turning point came around 2014 or 2015, when he began to recognise a recurring pattern in his life that mirrored his father’s past. That realisation, he said, helped him release years of resentment.
“I never spoke to my dad about it at the time, but I had already made peace with myself,” Clarence said, explaining that understanding his own actions helped him grow emotionally and mentally.
He added that true adulthood began for him when he stopped blaming others and took responsibility for his choices.
The son of veteran actress Clarion Chukwura also acknowledged that while he inherited some of his father’s traits, time and technology softened the consequences of his own mistakes.
“I made every single mistake my father made,” Clarence admitted. “I was just fortunate that time and technology prevented mine from being as disastrous as his. Once I realised that, I forgave him immediately, even before we talked. That was the start of my adulthood, and I’m still on that journey because adulthood never really ends.”
Clarence also noted that he continues to be mindful of how he navigates relationships with women, striving to avoid the missteps of the past, even as he acknowledged that he is still a work in progress.
