Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his experience living in the United States, revealing that he does not feel fully free while abroad.
In a recent interview with streamer Playboymax, the Afrobeats superstar shared that his sense of peace and authenticity exists primarily in Nigeria, where he feels most at home.
While Burna Boy acknowledged the opportunities that the U.S. offers, he explained that he struggles to find the same comfort and freedom he enjoys in his homeland.
“True freedom is in my country,” he said. “I can never be fully free here. In Nigeria, I can live without constant restrictions and just be myself.”
The singer also reflected on the challenges of navigating life in the U.S., citing the strict legal and social systems that make him cautious. “’Cause people go to jail—like all the best people I know go to jail—and I know that’s not what I’m trying to do,” he added.
For Burna Boy, no amount of opportunity abroad can replace the feeling of liberty and belonging he experiences in Nigeria.
