Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a landmark development in Nigeria’s coalition politics.
Peter Obi, alongside other political leaders from the South-East, formally joined the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State. The leaders said their decision was driven by the need to rescue Nigeria from what they described as the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi said the move marked a call for unity among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election. He urged opposition leaders to rally under the ADC, led by former Senate President David Mark, to work collectively for national renewal.
Reacting, Atiku, in a post on X on Wednesday, welcomed Obi’s decision and expressed optimism about building a strong opposition capable of forming a people-centred government.
He said the development marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s political history and expressed hope that the coalition would inspire other patriots to join the ADC in the quest for prosperity and peace.
