Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, and shared by Dele Momodu, Atiku conveyed his decision to quit the party with immediate effect.

The letter, obtained by SaharaReporters, reads:

“Dear Chairman,

LETTER OF RESIGNATION OF MEMBERSHIP

I am writing to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

I wish to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities the party has given me. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and twice as its Presidential candidate remain some of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is heartbreaking to take this decision.

However, I believe it has become necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory of the party, which I feel no longer aligns with the foundational principles we once upheld. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that now exist.

I wish the party and its leadership the very best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”

Atiku, alongside other prominent politicians, recently joined a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), positioning it as a better political alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Other key figures in the coalition include Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.
