Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reaffirmed that he will run for president in 2027. He stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will emerge as a formidable force.
He dismissed speculation that he might step aside and stressed that Nigeria needs urgent leadership change.
Rejecting Speculation About Withdrawal
Speaking through his spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, Atiku said Nigeria is in a state of “intensive care” under President Bola Tinubu.
He emphasized that his focus on national recovery surpasses personal ambition.
Olusunle quoted him: “The deceit, loss of values, corruption, and lack of accountability must concern every patriot. I will lead Nigeria’s reclamation and reconstruction.”
Atiku, formerly a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has long pursued coalitions to strengthen electoral chances.
Recently, the ADC, once a smaller party, united influential politicians. Consequently, it now offers a credible alternative outside APC and PDP dominance.
Atiku added that the coalition will rally Nigerians to challenge the current political status quo.
“ADC is leading a strong mass movement that will shock the world. We will upstage the status quo and leave doubters dumbstruck,” he affirmed.
Other Opposition Figures Join ADC
In addition to Atiku, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi and ex-Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi are seeking the ADC’s presidential ticket.
Together, they aim to form a united opposition against President Bola Tinubu in 2027. While Atiku emphasizes experience, Obi insists on equal footing, and Amaechi has hinted at joining the race.
Atiku clarified that his priority is national development, not personal gain. Prof. Ola Olateju, representing Atiku at a political gathering, said Atiku values effective governance above the presidency itself.
However, Atiku disowned statements attributed to Olateju suggesting otherwise. He stressed: “I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs decisive rescue from poverty, degeneration, and widespread anguish.”
Challenging Presidency Skepticism
Despite repeated attempts by the presidency to downplay the ADC, Atiku’s statement positions the coalition as a credible political force.
He concluded that ADC will lead a movement capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape, challenging entrenched powers, and restoring public trust.
