A former Secretary of the APC Committee of Diaspora Chairmen, Ayoola Lawal, has condemned a report published in The Economist USA (World Politics section, November 29, 2025 edition), describing its claims as misleading and damaging to Nigeria’s global image.

The report alleged that “Nigeria has closed schools nationwide as kidnappings have intensified in recent weeks.” Lawal firmly dismissed the claim as false, explaining that while some schools in high-risk areas temporarily suspended activities as a safety measure, there has been no nationwide closure of schools.

“This kind of misinformation does more harm than good,” Lawal said. “At a time when the nation is confronting serious security challenges, inaccurate headlines only heighten public fear, damage Nigeria’s international reputation, and embolden those attempting to destabilize the country.”

Lawal expressed sympathy for families affected by recent abductions, noting that rescue operations remain ongoing for over 250 students and teachers kidnapped from a Catholic school in Niger State. He also acknowledged the relief following the safe return of some schoolgirls kidnapped in Kebbi State.

He urged international media organisations to uphold accuracy and responsible journalism, particularly on sensitive issues involving national security and the welfare of children.

“Nigeria is at a critical moment and the public deserves the truth, not sensationalism,” he added. “The Economist USA should urgently correct this misinformation in the interest of fairness and journalistic integrity.”

Lawal warned that misleading international reports could trigger unnecessary panic, strain diplomatic relations, and distort global policy responses toward Nigeria.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to defeat terrorism and safeguard its youth, while calling on global media to uphold balance, honesty, and professionalism in their coverage of Africa.

Lawal also restated the commitment of Nigerians in the diaspora to peace, unity, and responsible engagement, pledging continued support for accurate communication with international partners.
