AHMEDABAD, India — India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking 100 years since the inaugural edition in Hamilton, Canada. The decision was confirmed on Wednesday after the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow approved the city, following a recommendation from the executive board.

Ahmedabad was chosen over Abuja, Nigeria, as the host city. India had previously expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics through a formal letter to the International Olympic Committee.

Dr PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, described the announcement as “a deep honour” and said the 2030 Games would celebrate a century of the Commonwealth movement while fostering unity and progress among athletes and communities.

The city, located in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, is home to the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket arena with a capacity of 130,000. Modi welcomed the announcement, saying India looks “forward to welcoming the world” for the historic event.
