Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently open diplomatic discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump following recent warnings from Washington about possible military intervention in Nigeria.
Trump reportedly instructed the U.S. Department of Defence to prepare for potential action if Nigeria fails to curb what he described as the “widespread killing of Christians.” However, the Federal Government has consistently denied any form of religious persecution, maintaining that insecurity affects all citizens regardless of faith.
Speaking during the November Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption City on Friday, Adeboye urged the Nigerian government to respond swiftly through diplomacy and effective security measures.
“If I were to advise, I’d say our leaders should act fast, act diplomatically, and act wisely,” Adeboye said. “Find a way to persuade the President of America to delay his action for about 100 days. Then come home and instruct our security chiefs to end the terrorist threat within 90 days or resign.”
The cleric cautioned that Nigeria must not rely on foreign nations for rescue if tensions with the United States escalate.
“If America attacks Nigeria, China, Russia, or others may issue condemnations, but that’s where it will end. No country will fight for us,” he warned. “This isn’t about Christians or Muslims—innocent people are dying every day. We need urgent intervention.”
His remarks come days after China warned the U.S. against interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
‘Some people are not telling the President the truth’
Adeboye also criticised parts of President Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, particularly the claim that internally displaced persons had begun returning home.
“I almost reacted publicly when I heard that,” he said. “I believe whoever wrote that speech does not wish the President well, because the very next day, a traditional ruler was killed.”
The respected cleric noted that Tinubu inherited a deeply challenging security situation but must now focus on delivering tangible solutions.
“I’m not here to apportion blame,” he stated. “As an applied mathematician, I’m more concerned with finding solutions to our problems.”
Adeboye concluded by urging national unity, reminding Nigerians that the country once enjoyed religious harmony and could regain peace through collective effort and honest leadership.
