Prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President, David Mark, former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, have gathered in Abuja ahead of a world press conference themed, “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy.”

The opposition leaders, drawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), are expected to address journalists on concerns surrounding the newly enacted 2026 Electoral Act.

The development follows the amendment’s passage by the National Assembly and its subsequent assent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Although the President has signed the amendment into law, opposition parties have expressed dissatisfaction with some of its provisions. Chief among their concerns is the absence of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units.

The opposition is reportedly advocating that such electronic transmission be made compulsory to enhance transparency and credibility in future elections.

Particularly contentious is the provision allowing manual collation of results in the event of network failure.

Opposition parties and some civil society organisations argue that the clause could undermine electoral transparency and potentially open the door to manipulation.

They are expected to outline their objections and propose amendments during the press conference.

Also present at the meeting are former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke; former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the ADC, Rauf Aregbesola; former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu; Salihu Lukman; and Senator Dino Melaye, among others.

The conference is being convened by leaders of Nigeria’s major opposition political parties, as political stakeholders continue to debate the implications of the amended Electoral Act on the country’s democratic process.
