Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has cancelled the Independence Day parade earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, in Port Harcourt. The event was planned to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement came through a statement signed by Sir Dede Sampson Friday of the Special Services Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

According to the statement, the decision aligns with the Federal Government’s directive suspending the national Independence Day parade.

“This is to inform the public that, in line with the pronouncement of the Federal Government, the parade scheduled for Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, October 1, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, has been cancelled,” the statement read. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause.”

Earlier, the Federal Government confirmed the suspension of all Independence Day parades across the country. In a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, authorities clarified that the suspension does not undermine the significance of the milestone celebration.

Although the parade will not hold, other anniversary activities remain on schedule. These include the presidential broadcast, cultural performances, and the grand finale of the National Campus Debate.
