Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Márquez, arrived in Abuja on Saturday for a three-day official visit designed to strengthen ties with Nigeria. She came with her spouse, Rafael Ocoró, alongside senior ministers, government officials, and business leaders committed to deepening cooperation.

Strengthening Bilateral and Economic Relations

The visit seeks to expand diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations between the two countries. In particular, discussions will cover trade, governance, agriculture, energy, education, and security. Moreover, both nations aim to boost South-South partnerships, focusing on women’s empowerment and cultural exchange.

Nigerian Leaders Welcome Márquez

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Márquez received a warm welcome. Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, joined Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs, and Mariya Bunkure, Minister of State for the FCT, in receiving her. In addition, Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, attended the reception with other senior officials.

Key Highlights of the Visit

During her stay, Márquez will engage in high-level activities aimed at strengthening cooperation. Key highlights include:

Signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in trade, agriculture, aviation, manufacturing, culture, and women’s empowerment.

A plenary session featuring both vice presidents.

The Nigeria-Colombia Business Forum, designed to connect investors and entrepreneurs.

Bilateral meetings between government representatives from both countries.

Focus on Business and Technology

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment will host business-to-business engagements, encouraging stronger private sector collaboration. Furthermore, a summit on Artificial Intelligence will highlight innovation and technological growth as key pillars of Nigeria-Colombia cooperation.
