US Introduces $80 Prepaid Duty on Nigerian Shipments

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has introduced a new directive requiring Nigerians to pay a prepaid customs duty of $80, or its naira equivalent, on all shipments to the United States. The policy takes effect on August 29, 2025.

Letters and Documents Exempted

NIPOST clarified that letters and official documents are exempt from the new charge. Only parcels and packages sent to the US will attract the duty.

Why the US Imposed the $80 Charge

In a notice on Friday, NIPOST explained that the duty follows a recent Executive Order by the US Government. The order suspended duty-free de minimis exemptions for postal shipments worldwide. It was enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Not Limited to Nigeria

The agency stressed that the directive applies to all postal operators worldwide, not just Nigeria. Therefore, the new duty will affect Nigerians sending parcels to family members, friends, or business partners in the US.

Possible Delivery Delays

NIPOST also disclosed that airlines and cargo carriers have already introduced stricter handling rules. As a result, delivery times could increase. In addition, extra Customs checks in the US may create further delays for recipients.

NIPOST’s Reassurance

Despite these changes, NIPOST assured customers that it is working with the Universal Postal Union, US Customs and Border Protection, and airline partners to reduce disruptions.

“We reassure our customers that NIPOST remains committed to safe, reliable, and efficient services despite this global regulatory adjustment,” the agency stated.
