The palace grounds of Warri came alive yesterday as Nigeria’s Atlanta ’96 Olympic gold-winning legends reunited for a novelty match. The event honoured His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III on the second day of his fourth coronation anniversary.
In a lively display that bridged generations, the Super Eagles icons shared the pitch with youthful chiefs and spirited sons of Warri. Every pass, dribble, and goal sparked cheers from dignitaries, traditional rulers, and jubilant supporters. The atmosphere reflected unity, joy, and respect for the monarch’s reign.
Moreover, the game was more than entertainment. It became a symbol of the Olu’s ability to blend heritage with modern celebration. Through sport, the monarch once again showed his reign’s unifying spirit.
From Healthcare to Heritage
While football lit up the evening, the day had begun with a landmark initiative. His Majesty commissioned the Renewed Hope Mother and Childcare Hospital at Ugbuwangwe.
This state-of-the-art, 80-bed facility was built through a partnership with the Presidency and the Office of the SDGs. It is designed to deliver quality healthcare for women and children. Furthermore, it represents a milestone in the kingdom’s socio-economic growth.
Earlier, the palace courtyard echoed with the Itsekiri language. Children competed in storytelling and recitations, delighting the audience. This cultural showcase highlighted the vitality of tradition and the Olu’s vision for the next generation.
The anniversary continues today with the spectacular Warri Regatta on the River Warri. The event promises a breathtaking display of maritime heritage, further strengthening the pride and renewal surrounding this celebration.
