The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the cancellation of the Shanono/Bagwai and Tsanyawa/Ghari bye-elections. Recently, security forces arrested about 280 political thugs carrying dangerous weapons.
Widespread Violence Triggers APC’s Call
National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka explained that armed thugs caused “extreme violence and election disruption” in multiple polling units. As a result, many voters fled, while security personnel struggled to maintain order.
Furthermore, Morka warned, “Continuing the elections under these conditions violates democratic principles and sets a dangerous precedent for electoral misconduct.” Therefore, APC insists the polls should be suspended until safety is guaranteed.
Police Recover Dangerous Weapons
Kano State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed that the police recovered weapons from the suspects. Additionally, he stated, “We have arrested 288 individuals carrying weapons to disrupt the bye-election.” Consequently, authorities will prosecute the suspects to uphold law and order.
Electoral Commission Responds
Resident Electoral Commissioner Abdu Zango confirmed that authorities detained over 100 suspected thugs in Bagwai Local Government Area on Saturday. Moreover, officials found various weapons and may arrest additional individuals to secure polling units.
Despite minor delays caused by logistical issues and violent disruptions, Zango noted that the elections proceeded relatively smoothly. He also praised the visible security presence, which helped ensure order and a peaceful voting process.
