Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged opposition parties to unite in order to prevent Nigeria from sliding into a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This statement comes after the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) raised concerns about opposition disunity. The group emphasised that without a strong alliance, it will be difficult to challenge the APC effectively in the 2027 general elections.

A Timely Appeal for Unity

Speaking to Vanguard through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku praised the SMBLF’s position. He described their intervention as both patriotic and timely. Moreover, he noted that their message reflects a shared commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democratic system.

Atiku explained that unity among opposition parties is essential for presenting a credible alternative government. Furthermore, he stressed that such unity could help address the country’s worsening economic and political challenges.

Putting the Nation First

According to Ibe, opposition leaders must put national interest above personal or party ambitions. Consequently, they will be able to form a stronger political platform to challenge the APC and improve citizens’ welfare.

“These regional leaders have clearly shown they are ready to work with the opposition,” Ibe said.
“The Tinubu administration is pushing Nigeria towards a one-party system, which undermines democracy.”

Democracy at Risk

Atiku warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces serious threats. Therefore, political leaders must act quickly to protect it. In addition, he stressed the importance of effective leadership to restore public trust and deliver good governance.

“We must save this democracy and provide leadership that improves lives,” he stated.
“The people are ready to support change. Hence, the opposition should seize this moment to unite.”

Looking Ahead to 2027

He concluded that collaboration between political parties and civil society groups is essential. As a result, removing the APC from power will become easier. Ultimately, he believes a united opposition offers the best chance for democratic renewal in 2027.
