A former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jacob Mark, has clarified that contrary to widespread belief, the party did not deny former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential ticket.

Speaking in an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, Mark explained that Obi was not denied the PDP ticket because he voluntarily left the party for the Labour Party before the presidential primaries were held.

“There’s no truth in the claim that Peter Obi was denied the PDP ticket. He made a personal decision to exit the PDP before the primaries and join the Labour Party,” Mark stated.

He also dismissed speculations that the PDP is considering offering Obi its 2027 presidential ticket, noting that such suggestions are personal views rather than official party positions.

Mark was responding to recent comments by former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, who suggested that Obi could return to the PDP and emerge as the party’s presidential candidate in 2027.

“I’m not aware of any formal decision by the PDP regarding Peter Obi’s return or candidacy. While many believe he remains a strong political figure after his 2023 performance, any such move would be his personal choice,” Mark said.

He acknowledged Obi’s political appeal, stating, “There’s no doubt Peter Obi is a formidable brand, just as the PDP is. A potential alliance could be powerful, but as of now, there’s no formal agreement or decision by the party.”

Mark added that while Obi could be a valuable asset to any party, including the PDP, such decisions are driven by strategic interests and party consensus.

“If a candidate is widely accepted and has electoral value, it’s only natural for political parties to consider them. But at this stage, it’s all speculation,” he concluded.
