Kolo Touré is thrilled to be back at Manchester City, this time as part of the club’s academy coaching staff. The former Ivorian international, who played a pivotal role in City’s rise to prominence, is eager to pass on his wealth of experience to the next generation of talent.
From Player to Coach: A Journey Across Clubs
Touré, who was instrumental in City’s first-ever Premier League title win in 2012 and their FA Cup triumph in 2011, left a lasting mark on the club during his playing days. His illustrious career also included stints at Arsenal, Liverpool, and Celtic, where he ended his playing days as a champion in 2017.
After transitioning into coaching, Touré took on roles with the Ivory Coast’s U-23 team, followed by coaching positions at Celtic and Leicester under Brendan Rodgers. In 2022, he was appointed manager of Wigan, but his tenure was short-lived after the team struggled in the Championship.
Mentoring Young Talent: A New Challenge for Touré
However, in 2023, Touré made a return to management, rejoining Manchester City as an assistant coach with the under-18s. Reflecting on the move, the 44-year-old expressed his excitement in an interview with the Manchester Evening News, calling it an incredible opportunity to return to the club he holds dear.
He said, “When the opportunity came, I was really happy to return. My connection to City has always been strong, and it feels special to work with young players who will shape the future of the game.”
Touré, who made over 500 professional appearances, including 102 for City, believes working with young talent has made him a better coach. He is excited about developing future stars and building on the skills he acquired during his own storied career.
Legacy and Connection with Manchester City Fans
Touré also reflected on the strong bond he shares with City supporters, noting the lasting legacy he and his brother, Yaya, created with the iconic chant still sung by fans today. “For Yaya and me, it means a lot that the fans still remember us after all these years. It’s not just about glory, but about being remembered as both players and people.”
With his vast experience and passion for nurturing talent, Kolo Touré is set to leave an indelible mark on the future of Manchester City.
