In a significant move towards tackling cervical cancer in Nigeria, First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu has committed a generous donation of N1 billion to the National Cancer Fund. This donation, aimed at eliminating cervical cancer, was announced during her meeting with the National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination, led by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako.

Emphasizing Early Detection and Stigma-Free Healthcare

During the event, Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of early detection and seeking medical help without shame. “No one chooses to be sick, and there should be no stigma around seeking help,” she said. The First Lady expressed her full support for the Taskforce’s mission, which focuses on a four-pronged approach: testing, screening, vaccination, and treatment.

She also highlighted the connection between health and national prosperity, saying, “A healthy nation is a wealthy nation.” Tinubu noted that with early intervention, the fight against cancer is winnable, stressing that the ongoing efforts will have a long-lasting impact on public health.

In recognition of the First Lady’s leadership, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Salako, acknowledged her pivotal role in the successful introduction of the HPV vaccine into Nigeria’s routine immunization program. This initiative has already reached 12 million girls aged 9 to 13 within the first nine months, with plans to immunize an additional six million girls this year.

National Taskforce’s Ambitious Goals for 2030

The Chairman of the Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination, Prof. Isaac Adewole, lauded the First Lady for her political will, noting that her involvement is crucial to achieving the goal of immunizing 8 million girls annually and eliminating cervical cancer by 2030. The Taskforce’s campaign, which will span 12 states this year, aims to reach even more communities.

The visit, which coincided with World Health Day 2025, also saw the presentation of WHO souvenirs to Senator Tinubu in recognition of her contributions to the fight against cervical cancer.

With this generous donation and continued advocacy, Senator Remi Tinubu is reaffirming her commitment to public health, particularly in the fight against cervical cancer, which has a significant impact on Nigerian women.
