The Lagos State Government has announced plans to redesign the Oshodi Transport Interchange (OTI) to improve efficiency and integrate it with the Rail Mass Transit system.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed this in a statement on Sunday. He emphasized the government’s commitment to optimizing the interchange and addressing existing challenges. The redesign will support the Red Line and Blue Line rail projects, ensuring a smooth connection between road and rail transport.

Osiyemi stated that a review of the OTI’s design and operations is essential. The government will hold discussions with key stakeholders to assess the facility’s current state and develop solutions for improved functionality.

“The interchange needs an upgrade to meet global standards. We will work with stakeholders to find practical solutions,” he said.

Site Inspection and Road Maintenance

The ministry will conduct a detailed site assessment to determine the best ways to optimize the interchange. Additionally, the government will collaborate with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to ensure frequent road maintenance around the facility.

“It is necessary to keep the roads around OTI in good condition. Regular maintenance will improve mobility and reduce congestion,” Osiyemi noted.

To improve security, the government plans to enforce strict regulations against street hawking around OTI. Law enforcement agencies will help curb illegal activities that put commuters at risk.

“We will take action against street trading that endangers pedestrians and disrupts movement. Our goal is to create a safer, more organized environment,” he added.

Stakeholder Engagement and Future Plans

The government has urged stakeholders to highlight areas needing improvement before the next inspection. This input will help shape the interchange’s redesign.

Osiyemi reassured residents of the government’s commitment to enhancing public transport. “With collaboration and proactive measures, we will improve services and provide a seamless commuting experience,” he stated.

The Oshodi Transport Interchange was initially designed to decongest the area and improve road transportation. However, Lagos’ expanding rail infrastructure now requires a more efficient, multimodal system. The upcoming redesign aims to create a modern, safe, and convenient transport hub.
