A member of the House of Representatives, Harris Okonkwo, has expressed strong optimism that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi will clinch the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 polls.

Okonkwo, who represents Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, made the remark while speaking with journalists in Ojoto, Anambra State.

The event was held during a medical outreach programme organised by the Annie Okonkwo Foundation for residents of the constituency.

The lawmaker recently left the Labour Party to join the ADC. According to him, his decision was driven by political calculations ahead of the next general election.

He noted that he and his supporters would mobilise support within the party to ensure Obi emerges as its presidential candidate.

“I believe that Nigerians know what is good for them. The good thing is that there will be no more delegates for the primaries, as it is going to be either by consensus or direct primaries,” he said.

“So the people are the ones who will decide when it comes to selecting the presidential candidate.”

Okonkwo also took time to criticise aspects of the amended Electoral Act. He argued that some provisions could limit political participation and weaken the right of citizens to freely associate.

“Truth be told, freedom of association and freedom of political participation should not be tampered with. I argued against it, but unfortunately we were in the minority and the majority had its way,” he said.

The federal lawmaker further explained that although the law discourages membership in multiple political parties, it should not prevent individuals from supporting candidates outside their political platforms.

“One could belong to one party but decide to support a candidate in another party. There should be no limit to freedom of association,” he added.

Okonkwo also raised concerns about how public resources are being handled by the government. He urged leaders to place the welfare of Nigerians above personal or political interests.

“Our concern should be the way the Nigerian government manages our resources and the level of extravagance being exhibited at the expense of the people. I believe that in the long run, truth will prevail,” he said.
