Former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has charged the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, SAN, to lead a comprehensive rebuilding of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Babangida gave the directive during a courtesy visit by Turaki and members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

Sources who were present at the meeting said discussions focused on party renewal, internal stability, and the need to strengthen political structures across the country.

Speaking at the meeting, Turaki explained that the delegation had initially planned a goodwill visit but decided to combine it with a condolence visit following recent abductions in parts of Niger State.

Babangida commended the PDP leadership for sympathising with the people and government of the state, describing the period as one of the most challenging in recent times. He also reaffirmed the party’s nationwide foundation and historical relevance.

The former Head of State noted that the PDP remains one of the most structurally entrenched political parties in Nigeria. He recalled his failed attempt to institutionalise a two-party system during his time in office, which he said was resisted by the political elite.

Drawing from his experience in governance and political organisation, Babangida urged the new chairman to lead with caution, consultation, and inclusiveness as he embarks on repositioning the party.

“You have admitted that mistakes were made and that steps are already being taken to correct them. I urge you to be tactful, listen to diverse opinions, and work towards building a peaceful and progressive party. You have the capacity to succeed,” he said.

To underscore the strength of party loyalty in Nigeria, Babangida shared an anecdote from the military era involving a former administrator in Niger State who encountered a resident who remained loyal to the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and President Shehu Shagari, despite the existence of a military government.

According to him, the encounter demonstrated how deeply political parties are rooted in the consciousness of the people.

In his response, Turaki thanked Babangida for his enduring support and guidance, noting that the PDP would continue to benefit from his experience and knowledge of Nigeria’s political history.

He said the party is determined to restructure its internal organs, rebuild public trust, and reclaim its electoral strength ahead of 2027.

“We are committed to resetting the PDP, strengthening its institutions, and restoring its winning spirit as we prepare for future contests,” Turaki stated.

Sources further disclosed that Babangida advised the party leadership to prioritise unity, rebuild confidence among members, and stabilise the party’s structures nationwide.

Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, delivered the vote of thanks, commending Babangida for his continued role in promoting national unity and political stability.

Members of the delegation included the Deputy National Chairmen (North and South), National Secretary Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, Kaduna State PDP Chairman Edward Percy Masha, former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Musa Bala of Kebbi State, members of the NWC, the Niger State PDP Working Committee, and the immediate past state chairman, Tanko Beji.
