Chief Olabode George, former National Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has warned that Nigeria is on a dangerous path to self-destruction. He expressed grave concern over the worsening insecurity, corruption, and poverty that plague the nation. George emphasized that these issues continue to grow under the current administration, which has failed to tackle them effectively.
George also criticized President Bola Tinubu for traveling to Paris, France, while the country struggles with security issues and social unrest. He questioned the president’s priorities, highlighting the growing crisis within Nigeria. The PDP leader’s dismay deepened as he condemned the government’s handling of serious allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. George accused the ruling party of trying to silence opposition through partisan actions.
Nigeria’s Democracy Under Threat
The former PDP chairman warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces significant threats. He cited discrepancies in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) actions, particularly regarding the recall process. George called on Nigerians to stand up against injustice and demand accountability from the government.
“Nigerians no longer feel safe in their own land, but the government and the Senate are focused on recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan instead of addressing the nation’s real issues,” he said.
Political Instability and the Risk of Military-Style Rule
George warned that the current administration risks repeating the mistakes that led to the collapse of the First and Second Republics. He pointed to recent events, such as the withdrawal of security from an elected speaker in Lagos, which was reassigned to a deposed speaker. He also criticized the unilateral actions of the president, which overturned a legislative decision in Rivers State without due process. George described these actions as indicative of a government more akin to a military dictatorship than a democratic system.
Tensions in Bayelsa and the Growing Political Crisis
George’s concerns extended to Bayelsa State, where tensions are rising. He noted reports that former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike plans to attend a rally in Bayelsa despite opposition from the local government. George questioned why Wike should be allowed to stoke tensions in the region, given the volatile situation in nearby Rivers State. He also criticized the Kogi State Police Command for banning rallies and political gatherings due to the actions of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
George lamented that while Nigerians continue to suffer, political leaders remain indifferent to the people’s struggles. He criticized the ruling elite for prioritizing their political maneuvering, such as removing Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, rather than addressing the real issues facing the country.
The statement concluded with a call for unity and collective action. George urged Nigerians to fight against systemic injustice and stand up to the political elite that threatens the nation’s future. As the country grapples with growing instability, the public’s attention is focused on whether the government can bring about meaningful change or if the country will continue to spiral toward crisis.
