Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has explained why he chose not to go down on one knee when he proposed to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Timeless Podcast, the 30-year-old grandson of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti stated that marriage should be a mutual agreement between two partners rather than one person begging the other.
“I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” Kuti said.
The couple, who tied the knot in a private ceremony in Lagos in November 2023, met during their secondary school days where Onyenso was his school daughter.
Kuti, who has consistently defended his union against critics, also reiterated his stance against ethnic bigotry, describing online criticisms regarding his marriage to an Igbo woman as a form of slave mentality.
