“It Hurt Deeply” — Okeke Reveals Why He Quit Hammarby IF

Oslo-born Nigerian forward Obilor Okeke has broken his silence on why he swapped Hammarby IF for Brommapojkarna last month.

Hammarby signed Norway U21 international Victor Lind in February 2026 for a reported transfer fee of 2.6 million euros, with Okeke moving in the opposite direction.

Okeke found opportunities limited at Hammarby due to intense competition for places in wide areas, making just two starts in the Allsvenskan from a possible eleven, following his move from KFUM Oslo.

The 23-year-old revealed that towards the end of his spell at Hammarby, he was informed by manager Kalle Karlsson and sporting director Micke Hjelmberg that the club intended to prioritise investment in other players, irrespective of his performances.

“They bought Lind for a lot of money and said they would invest in him, that he would play a lot. So even if I were to start and do well, jump in and do well or do well in training, they said it would be difficult for me to get playing time,” Okeke said to Sportbladet.

Reflecting on the moment he was informed that his performances would not change the club’s decision, Okeke admitted: “What can I say… It was an unpleasant feeling. It hurt to hear it.”

Okeke was in a similar situation in Norway as he did not get adequate playing time at his former club Fredrikstad.

“Then I left and felt a desire for revenge. I would show Fredrikstad that “you were wrong about me”. Then I became the young player of the year.

“I have that desire for revenge now too, and I also want to show BP that they are doing the right thing by believing in me.”

Okeke will be hoping to make his debut for IF Brommapojkarna on Monday afternoon when they face BK Häcken in their season opener.
