Global music sensation Lizzo has opened up about her deeply personal journey with intimacy, revealing that she remained a virgin until her 30s as part of a childhood vow.
Speaking on the Friends Keep Secret podcast, the 37-year-old singer explained that her decision was rooted in both her religious upbringing and a personal challenge she set for her career. The “Truth Hurts” star disclosed that she had promised herself she would not have sex until she secured a Grammy Award.
“I just promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy,” Lizzo stated. Even after her historic night in 2020, when she took home three awards, she admitted that intimacy was still not her top priority. “After I won in 2020, it was not even in my cards.”
The singer, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, also touched on the social pressures she faced, admitting she often felt embarrassed and would lie to her friends about her lack of experience. She noted that her first kiss did not happen until she was 21, citing a pact made within her religious circle to wait until marriage.
Lizzo’s 2020 Grammy haul included Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
