Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has signalled his intention to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid failed reconciliation efforts with the party faction led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Naija News reports that Mohammed made this known shortly after a closed-door meeting with the ADC delegation, led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Government House in Bauchi on Wednesday.
Governor Mohammed described the ADC as a “more enduring and acceptable platform”, acknowledging ongoing talks to join the party.
He further promised a formal decision by Thursday, noting that any move would involve consulting stakeholders.
He said, “I have pursued all avenues for reconciliation within PDP, but it has not worked,” Governor Mohammed said. “We cannot remain where we are not wanted. ADC appears to be where our political destiny is taking us.”
While criticising Wike, Mohammed said the Minister was being used to destroy the PDP.
He stressed, “We have somebody called Wike who is being used to destroy us. He has already taken over the party, holding all the positions of PDP.”
Speaking on behalf of the ADC delegation, Babachir Lawal said the party is courting Governor Mohammed to strengthen opposition efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Babachir, it will be difficult for Nigerians to survive if the opposition party fails to oust President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
He said, “Senator David Mark sent us because he knows the battle ahead in 2027 can only succeed if all segments of Nigeria with goodwill unite. If we fail, Nigeria may not survive as we know it. People could be starving, unable to afford medical care, while insurgency spreads from home to home.”
Babachir Lawal further expressed optimism about Mohammed’s possible defection to the ADC, describing him as fearless and a “dogged fighter” whose leadership would be vital to the ADC’s mission.
He added, “When he joins ADC, he will be one of our field commanders. Our talks were fruitful, friendly, and brotherly. His entry into ADC will alarm the current government and could provoke lawlessness in attempts to rig the 2027 elections. But we are confident that with him on board, we will be battle-tested and ready to confront the government, and victory will be ours.”
