A member of the House of Representatives for Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in Kano State, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, has called for the suspension of legislative activities and the declaration of a state of emergency over Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

Speaking during a special plenary on insecurity on Tuesday, Ado-Doguwa said the scale of killings and kidnappings across the country had reached an alarming level that demands drastic action.

He lamented that citizens could no longer carry out basic daily activities safely, noting that farmers, traders and worshippers now live in constant fear. According to him, continuing legislative business under such conditions amounts to ignoring the suffering of Nigerians.

The lawmaker stressed that while the constitution places primary responsibility for security on the federal government, state and local authorities must also be held accountable for protecting lives and property within their domains.

Ado-Doguwa described the persistent attacks and abductions as a deliberate attempt to weaken the Nigerian state and destabilise its political system. He warned against attributing the crisis to religion, ethnicity or political affiliation, insisting that the violence cuts across all divides.

He further urged greater cooperation among all tiers of government to restore peace, especially as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. He added that lawmakers must also accept responsibility by strengthening their oversight roles and engaging with community-based security structures in their constituencies.

The call comes amid renewed attacks by armed groups, particularly on schools and places of worship in states such as Kwara, Kebbi and Niger, where several persons have been killed and others abducted.

In a related development, the government confirmed the release of 38 abducted worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State, and 51 pupils taken from a Catholic school in Niger State. President Bola Tinubu also ordered intensified security operations in the forests of the affected states following the release of 24 schoolgirls kidnapped in Kebbi on Tuesday.
