Four people, including two soldiers, were killed on Friday night when Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched a fresh attack in Damboa Local Government Area of southern Borno State. A serving Nigerian Army brigadier general, who was abducted during the assault, has since returned to base, military sources confirmed. He reportedly arrived around 10 a.m. on Saturday.
According to information obtained by BusinessDay, the attack occurred when a military convoy ran into an ambush near the Sabon Gari–Wajiroko axis along the Damboa–Biu road. The insurgents were said to have fired rocket-propelled grenades and heavy gunfire to break the convoy’s formation, forcing troops to retreat.
A security source earlier described the situation as dire, noting that the brigade commander had been taken away during the raid and his whereabouts were initially uncertain. “We lost four people, including two soldiers and two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force who were on patrol with us,” the source said.
Another military source confirmed that several personnel were unaccounted for during the early hours after the attack, including the brigadier general who has now been found. The attackers also reportedly made away with 16 motorcycles and ammunition during the ambush.
