Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Katung disclosed his decision in a statement on Thursday, explaining that the move followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political leaders, family members, and close associates.

According to the lawmaker, his defection was driven by a desire to provide more effective representation and ensure his constituency has a stronger voice in national decision-making.

“This realignment is driven by a genuine desire to serve our people more effectively and ensure that our voices are heard and respected at the highest decision-making tables where the destinies of our communities are being shaped,” he stated.

Katung added that his decision was also influenced by appeals from constituents and discussions with President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who, he said, expressed willingness to collaborate with leaders from the region to foster development.

The senator said he made the move alongside his colleague, Rep. Daniel Amos, and some members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, emphasizing that it was in the collective interest of their people.

“The APC’s developmental footprints across our senatorial district reflect a commitment to inclusion, equity, and progress,” Katung noted.

He further explained that his defection would help consolidate existing developmental strides and attract more federal attention to Southern Kaduna.

Appealing for understanding, Katung urged supporters and associates who may disagree with his decision not to allow political differences strain personal relationships.

“While politics sometimes divides friends or strains relationships, I appeal to all who may feel disappointed not to allow this disagreement destroy personal relationships built on years of trust and shared experiences,” he said.

He reaffirmed his dedication to peace, unity, and development in the Kaduna South Senatorial District.

The senator’s defection comes two days after five members of the House of Representatives from Enugu State also left the PDP for the APC.

Their defection, which took place during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, was witnessed by APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah — who himself defected to the ruling party less than two weeks ago.

Those who joined the APC include Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South), Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu (Aninri/Awgu/Oji River), Hon. Dennis Nnamdi Agbo (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu), Hon. Oke Martins (Igbo Etiti/Uzo Uwani), and Hon. Nnolim John Nnaji (Nkanu East/Nkanu West).
