A motorist reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol lost his life in a lone crash late Saturday night in the Surulere area of Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on October 25, 2025, near the Alaka Under Bridge. The driver, who was in a navy blue Toyota Camry with registration number EKY 311 GK, was said to be speeding toward Iponri when he lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted several times before coming to a halt.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, said officers of the agency’s new 24-hour Night Operations Squad promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. The area was cordoned off to prevent further accidents, while police officers from the Bode Thomas Division took over for documentation and recovery.

Eyewitnesses told officials that the deceased appeared intoxicated before the crash. His mobile phone, recovered from the wreckage, helped authorities contact his family, to whom the remains were later released.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the victim’s family, describing the tragedy as “a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of drunk driving.” He urged motorists to stay alert and responsible, especially during the Ember Months when road accidents typically rise.

Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing road safety through its continuous operations and public education campaigns. He cited the outcome of the recent “LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders’ Forum,” which emphasized the theme “Safe Roads, Safe Lives… LASTMA Cares,” highlighting the agency’s resolve to tackle reckless driving and strengthen inter-agency collaboration for safer Lagos roads.
