Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, defended former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on Thursday. He insisted that Bello will emerge stronger from ongoing money laundering allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Speaking outside the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Agbese described the trial as a test of Bello’s resilience rather than proof of wrongdoing. Showing solidarity, he expressed full support for the former governor.

“Yahaya Bello is one Nigerian who cannot and will never steal from the public purse,” Agbese told journalists. “I have known him for over two decades, and I can vouch for his character as a patriot, a nationalist, and a man dedicated to the progress of his people.”

The lawmaker praised Bello’s tenure as governor, highlighting his selflessness and commitment to public service. According to him, this is not a trial of a corrupt politician but of a patriot who left Lugard House poorer than he entered it. Moreover, Bello poured his heart and resources into transforming Kogi State.

Agbese recalled the challenges Kogi faced when Bello assumed office in 2016, including infrastructural decay, insecurity, and economic stagnation. In response, Bello implemented bold reforms, youth empowerment programs, and major investments in roads, healthcare, and education. Rather than amass personal wealth, he left office with a leaner pocket but a richer legacy of service.

He urged Nigerians to look beyond the EFCC allegations, describing them as “a smokescreen designed to distract from Bello’s achievements.” For example, projects like the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre and the Kogi State University Teaching Hospital in Anyigba reflected his people-centered approach. Additionally, initiatives such as free education policies, women and youth empowerment, and improved security further demonstrated his commitment.

“This case is less about accountability and more about settling political scores,” Agbese said. He added that Bello’s rising profile as a young, dynamic leader made him a target for those threatened by his influence. Nevertheless, truth is resilient, and Yahaya Bello’s truth will prevail.

Concluding his remarks, Agbese called on Nigerians to support Bello. He described him as “the hope of a new generation of leaders who prioritize service over self. This trial will strengthen his resolve and amplify his voice as a champion of the people.”
