Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has met with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore, who has been leading calls for Kanu’s release, said the meeting took place in Abuja on Thursday. He revealed that Jonathan agreed on the need for a decisive and fair resolution of the matter.

“President Jonathan acknowledged the urgency of addressing Kanu’s continued incarceration and promised to meet with President Bola Tinubu soon to discuss the issue,” Sowore stated.

The activist also expressed appreciation to the former president for recognizing the importance of resolving the case “in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.”

Sowore noted that Jonathan’s stance adds him to a growing list of prominent Nigerians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and former senator Shehu Sani, who have publicly demanded justice for Kanu.

He reiterated that Kanu’s detention stems from his advocacy against what he described as “long-standing marginalization in Nigeria,” insisting that his case should be treated like others that were politically motivated and later withdrawn.

“Nnamdi Kanu should be released without further delay,” Sowore declared. “I call on political, cultural, ethnic, and religious leaders—especially from the South East—to join this noble cause.”

He specifically mentioned Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, and former Minister Obiageli Ezekwesili among those he wants to support the campaign.

Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to leading a peaceful nationwide protest on October 20 to demand Kanu’s freedom.
