The Imo State Government has officially commenced payment of the new ₦104,000 minimum wage to its civil servants, fulfilling Governor Hope Uzodimma’s earlier commitment to improve workers’ welfare.
Reports from state workers confirmed receipt of salary alerts reflecting the revised wage structure, marking a significant milestone in the governor’s promise to enhance the livelihood of public employees.
The new salary plan also includes ₦513,000 for medical doctors and ₦220,000 as the entry-level pay for lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions.
According to the government, the wage increase aims to strengthen workers’ purchasing power, enabling them to meet essential needs while stimulating local economic growth.
“With this wage adjustment, we expect increased spending capacity among workers, which will, in turn, energize local businesses and boost economic activities,” a government statement noted.
Imo now leads the pack among Nigerian states with the highest minimum wage, followed by Lagos at ₦88,000, Rivers at ₦85,000, and Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, both pegged at ₦80,000.
Analysts believe the policy could trigger a positive ripple effect across sectors, driving consumer spending and revitalizing the state’s economy.
