The newly enthroned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, received former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent opposition leaders at his Ibadan residence on Tuesday. During the visit, the monarch emphasized his shift from partisan politics to traditional leadership, affirming his commitment to serving all residents.

Atiku led a distinguished delegation that included former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, and other influential figures from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to congratulate Oba Ladoja on his historic coronation.

The visit occurred just four days after Oba Ladoja’s inauguration as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a grand ceremony attended by President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, four other state governors, top monarchs, and national dignitaries. Atiku was notably absent from the coronation.

Atiku Apologizes for Coronation Absence

Addressing journalists, Atiku explained that his absence was due to unavoidable protocol constraints, not a lack of respect for the monarch.

“We are here to congratulate Oba Ladoja. We regret missing the coronation. Protocol arrangements prevented our attendance, but our respect remains,” Atiku said. “Please accept our sincere apologies.”

Oba Ladoja Draws a Line from Politics

Responding, Oba Ladoja, a former governor and senator, made it clear that his political career has ended.

“I am now Olubadan of Ibadanland, serving everyone. Politics is behind me,” he declared, earning applause from the attendees.

Reflecting on his political journey, the monarch recalled shared experiences with many guests in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), years in exile, and later the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), before moving to the Accord Party, which gained influence in Oyo politics.

“Now, my focus is solely on the Olubadan institution. You are all welcome to my home,” he added.

Commitment to Service and Justice

Oba Ladoja also reaffirmed his dedication to justice, fairness, and the welfare of his people.

“Leaders must promote justice and fairness. I will serve Ibadan, Oyo State, Africa, and beyond, relying on your guidance and support,” he said.

The meeting concluded on a cordial note, with Atiku and his delegation extending congratulations and pledging support for the monarch’s reign.
