The Obidient Movement has dismissed claims that it pleaded with former President Goodluck Jonathan to abandon his alleged 2027 presidential ambition in favour of Mr. Peter Obi.
Speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT on Sunday, the group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, clarified that the movement only urged Jonathan to acknowledge and reciprocate Obi’s past support.
According to Tanko, Obi stood firmly by Jonathan in 2015 when the opposition attempted to unseat him. He stressed that Obi never worked with those who plotted Jonathan’s removal.
Tanko explained, “That report is false. We never asked Jonathan to step down for Peter Obi. What I said was simple: Obi stood by Jonathan when some political figures, including Rotimi Amaechi, publicly claimed credit for removing him from office. Unlike others, Obi defended him.”
He added that the movement only appealed to Jonathan to show gratitude by supporting Obi’s 2027 presidential bid.
“I never used the words ‘beg’ or ‘step down.’ We simply asked Jonathan to reciprocate Obi’s good gestures as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election,” Tanko stated.
