The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emphasized the strategic importance of Ibadanland in shaping Nigeria’s human and capital development.
Obi made the remark during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence on Sunday.
Accompanied by a Labour Party chieftain and notable Igbo indigenes, the former Anambra governor praised Ibadan indigenes at home and abroad for their contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.
According to him, Nigeria’s political and economic history cannot be told without highlighting Ibadan’s pivotal role. He described the city as a welcoming hub, renowned for its hospitality and inclusive spirit.
“Ibadan has always shaped the socio-economic and political history of this country,” Obi said. “Its influence cannot be overlooked. The ancient city is also fortunate to have leaders like Oba Ladoja, who brings vast experience as a former governor and senator.”
He expressed confidence that Oba Ladoja’s leadership as the 44th Olubadan will attract broad support nationwide. Obi also pledged his personal commitment to ensuring a successful reign.
In his response, Oba Ladoja described his ascension as a continuation of his service to humanity. He attributed his survival and journey to the throne to divine grace.
“The Olubadan is enthroned by God, not by wealth or influence,” he noted. “That is why I remain grateful and committed to serving with humility.”
