The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) has reassured stakeholders of its dedication to fairness and professionalism. The statement came after concerns about possible harsh regulation in the outdoor advertising sector.

Managing Director, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, stressed that LASAA does not intend to “wield the big stick.” He said the Agency often organizes stakeholder forums, builds cordial relationships, and offers concessions such as discounts on vacant billboard fees. LASAA also seeks industry input before introducing major policies.

Role of LASAA in the Market

Prince Akiolu clarified that LASAA does not compete with private operators. Instead, it manages a few state-approved structures mainly used for public awareness campaigns and government programmes. The Agency’s core mandate is to maintain order, protect public safety, and preserve environmental aesthetics.

The LASAA boss explained that strict licensing rules allow only qualified practitioners to operate. He noted that a moratorium on new permits has been in place since early 2025. This, he said, protects the industry from billboard oversupply and helps maintain professional standards.

Safety and Compliance Checks

LASAA’s Health and Safety team conducts routine inspections to confirm that outdoor installations meet engineering standards. According to Prince Akiolu, this proactive approach reduces risks to lives and property.

The Managing Director emphasized that LASAA prioritizes prevention. The Agency relies on monitoring, early warnings, and corrective action, with enforcement applied only when necessary. He pointed out that many challenges, such as spacing violations and unapproved structures, result from operator non-compliance rather than regulatory excess.

Prince Akiolu urged the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) and licensed practitioners to step up self-regulation. He encouraged them to report violations to strengthen safety, improve Lagos’s visual appeal, and support economic vibrancy.

Enforcement and Cleanup Drive

To restore order, LASAA has launched a statewide cleanup of illegal billboards and signage. The Agency said this initiative protects the public interest and enhances the city’s urban beauty.

Balanced Approach for Industry Growth

Prince Akiolu reiterated that LASAA’s mandate is not to stifle growth. Instead, the Agency aims to provide a transparent and sustainable regulatory environment. He assured stakeholders that investments will remain secure, residents will stay safe, and Lagos’s visual identity will continue to thrive.
