Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the “double standards” surrounding the handling of Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson. Emmanson was forcefully removed from a plane, nearly stripped, after allegedly assaulting airline staff.

Although Obi apologized for Emmanson’s misconduct, he sharply criticized the degrading treatment she received. He described the security operatives’ actions as “dehumanizing” and a blatant abuse of power.

Recently, taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi stated, ‘The unfortunate and dishonourable drama on Ibom Air highlights the double standards in our society. Furthermore, it exposes the failure of our security agencies to act with civility.

He continued by apologizing to the Ibom Air crew who endured the assault. Obi emphasized the importance of good conduct as a reflection of societal progress and respect.

Unequal Justice Exposed in Handling of Passenger’s Case

Obi contrasted Emmanson’s swift court remand with the lenient treatment of another individual involved in a more dangerous incident on a flight. The other offender, who allegedly endangered hundreds of lives by preventing a plane from taking off, remains free, with some officials advocating for leniency.

“This situation clearly reveals unequal justice,” Obi explained. “Our legal system must never favor the influential over the powerless.”

He urged Nigeria to build a justice system that treats all citizens fairly. This system must be free of bias based on wealth, status, or gender. Obi noted that Emmanson’s offence is minor compared to the corruption and crimes many public officials commit daily without facing consequences.

Call for Fairness and Accountability in Nigeria’s Justice System

Obi’s comments highlight a pressing need to end selective enforcement and discrimination in Nigeria’s courts. He called on the Minister of Aviation and relevant authorities to clarify the apparent inconsistencies in the case.

“Justice must be fair and impartial,” Obi declared. “If it is not, then it amounts to nothing. The rule of law must be the foundation of our democracy.”
