The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, will face criminal charges in court.

Investigators linked the case to credible allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences. As a result, the police have gathered evidence and prepared the matter for trial.

Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi explained that officers arrested Sowore in Abuja only after verifying the complaints. Moreover, they acted in line with constitutional safeguards, due process, and the suspect’s rights.

Adejobi noted that the activist received bail within the 48-hour limit stated in Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). In addition, he confirmed that Sowore understands the nature of the allegations and must appear in court soon.

Police Reject Torture Allegations

Viral photos showed Sowore with a bandaged arm, sparking claims of torture. However, Adejobi dismissed these claims as false and misleading.

He clarified that the bandage belonged to Sowore before the arrest and had nothing to do with any injury in custody. Furthermore, the police offered him two independent medical examinations on August 7 and 8, which would have been carried out by senior medical officers.

According to Adejobi, Sowore refused both offers. “The record shows that we provided two chances for medical verification, and he declined each time,” he said.

Adejobi emphasised that Sowore’s detention has legal backing from a valid remand order. Therefore, he urged civil society groups and media outlets to avoid sensational reporting.

He stressed that spreading unverified claims could mislead the public and interfere with ongoing investigations.

Police Reaffirm Commitment to Justice

The NPF pledged to protect human rights, uphold the rule of law, and deliver justice without bias. “No individual, no matter their status or influence, is above the law,” Adejobi said.

He promised regular updates on the case and encouraged the media to report responsibly. In conclusion, he reminded Nigerians that only verified information should guide public opinion.
