The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has backed Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for requesting that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, notify him before visiting the state.
Speaking in Benin City during the launch of Edo State’s modern mass transit buses, Wike noted that as a former governor, he always ensured proper protocol was followed. He recalled providing vehicles and logistics for Obi during his presidential campaign visits to Rivers State.
Wike explained that governors are responsible for the safety of visiting dignitaries within their states. He dismissed reports suggesting that Okpebholo had threatened Obi over the visit.
“When I was Governor of Rivers State and Peter Obi visited, he informed me beforehand, and I provided him with vehicles and logistics. At that level, if anything happens to him, it becomes my responsibility.
“Governor Okpebholo, you are right. Obi should inform you before coming to Edo State,” Wike said.
