The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives has raised concerns over a recent statement by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo. The group described the governor’s remarks as a direct threat to the life and safety of Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

They condemned the comments as “despicable, uncouth, and shocking,” warning that such rhetoric could incite violence and undermine democracy.

At a public event on Friday, July 18, Governor Okpebholo reportedly said that Peter Obi must not enter Edo State without security clearance. He warned that Obi’s safety would not be guaranteed if he visited the state unannounced.

In his words:

“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.”

In response, LP Caucus Leader, Hon. Victor Ogene, issued a statement from Awka. He emphasized that Peter Obi has the same constitutional right as any Nigerian to move freely across the country without fear, harassment, or threat.

Ogene described the governor’s words as “unconstitutional, undemocratic, and unacceptable.” He urged all political leaders to avoid incitement and uphold their oath to protect lives and uphold democratic values.

Peter Obi’s Track Record Deserves Praise, Not Threats

The caucus praised Obi for his philanthropic efforts across Nigeria. According to them, his contributions to human capital development transcend politics, ethnicity, or religion.

“Rather than being targeted, Peter Obi deserves protection for championing development, democracy, and unity,” the statement read.

Call for President Tinubu’s Intervention

The lawmakers asked President Bola Tinubu to immediately caution Governor Okpebholo. They warned that no harm must come to Peter Obi in any part of Nigeria.

“It is alarming that a governor with a senatorial background would make such inflammatory remarks publicly. What message does this send to young Nigerians about leadership and respect for the rule of law?” the caucus questioned.

The LP caucus warned against the growing trend of political intimidation. They reminded all parties that democracy thrives on dialogue, not threats or coercion.

They also pointed out that Governor Okpebholo made the statement during the defection of Hon. Marcus Onobun, a lawmaker he had earlier threatened with house demolition over alleged cult activities.

“Will he still demolish Onobun’s house now that he has joined his party?” the statement asked.

Final Warning to the APC

The caucus referenced similar threats made by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue. They warned the APC not to use intimidation to counter Peter Obi’s growing popularity.

“Security of lives and property remains the government’s top responsibility. Nigeria must not be an exception,” the statement concluded.
