The National Assembly has postponed its scheduled plenary session in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in a London hospital at the age of 82.

This was announced on Monday in a statement by Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk to the National Assembly. According to him, all legislative activities are suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, July 22, 2025,” the statement read.

Lawmakers Urged to Participate in Burial

Members of the National Assembly have been asked to adjust their schedules. This will allow them to take part in the late president’s funeral and national mourning activities.

The statement also extended condolences to Buhari’s family and described him as a statesman. It noted that he served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of duty.

Buhari’s Political Journey

Muhammadu Buhari ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985. He later returned as a civilian president, winning the 2015 election under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He became the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent in Nigeria’s history.

Buhari was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023. His administration focused on anti-corruption, economic reforms, and national security.

Although his leadership style drew both praise and criticism, many Nigerians acknowledge his role in shaping the country’s democratic path. He was widely seen as a disciplined and principled figure who remained committed to Nigeria’s unity.

The federal government is expected to announce detailed burial arrangements soon.
